The Motorola Motoluxe, expected for release in February/March 2012, is Motorola’s attempt to create an affordable, large screen, Android smartphone. The MOTOLUXE, alongside the Defy Mini, is one of Motorola’s first releases since Motorola Mobility - the mobile phone side of the business - was acquired by Google.
Many saw this as a move by Google not necessarily to turnaround a struggling part of the Motorola business but rather an attempt to expand their patented technology portfolio to use in other future Google phones. Nevertheless, the Google owned phone makers announced in 2011 their intention to release the two new attempts to break into the smartphone market.
The MOTOLUXE, with its large 4inch, 480 x 854 pixel screen on the front and a sharp 8 megapixel camera on its back with a built in zoom feature, certainly looks like a potential leader in the low-cost market. It’s very unlikely to ever rival the likes of the iPhone but then it was never really intended to as Motorola look to capitalise on this low-budget market. 
One of its smaller but more noticeable features is the “dedicated lanyard groove” as Motorola named it, which as the name suggests allows users to attach a lanyard to the bottom of the phone. This groove also acts as a notification indicator, flashing various colours depending on the type of notification - whether an incoming call or text message, a missed call or a new email. It is built using a single-core 800MHz processor with 512MB of RAM and works on the Android 2.3 system but with a custom user interface.
As well as its sleek new look, it is capable of working on 3G, EDGE/GPRS and of course the necessity for any modern mobile phone, Wi-Fi. It also has the basic features that you would expect to be built-in to a new smartphone, including an FM radio, MP3 playback as well as the standard built in apps you would expect with a company owned by Google including the ability to set-up your emails, use GPS and direction functions through Google maps, search the web, view current and future weather forecasts, read the growing number of eBooks through the Google books app and of course, a calendar that can easily sync with your online Google calendar.
In my opinion the MOTOLUXE, whilst still quite basic, is perfect for the niche it is targeting in the low-budget category. With a stylish, suave design and all the core capabilities that a modern smartphone needs, it fulfills all the requirements without overflowing with features. Motorola may not have released a price list for the MOTOLUXE yet but with the iPhone and most other Android models costing hundreds of pounds, particularly the latest models, the MOTOLUXE is likely to be a small percentage of the cost of its rivals.
